The Liquid Swords Update: Summer 2023

From Iceland to Space, Liquid Swords has traveled far and wide this summer!

Summer vacation is usually four weeks in Sweden. Yes, you heard that right, four weeks! With this in mind, it could be easy to think Liquid Swords hasn’t been busy this summer, but you’d be wrong. While we did enjoy the always-welcome period of downtime, relaxation, and complaints about the less-than-preferable weather (in true Swedish fashion), it’s also been a time of meaningful conversations, new connections, and an always-important healthy sprinkle of fun!

Christofer, our founder and CCO, finished his summer by attending DICE Reykjavík at the end of September. Not only did he seemingly bring the cold winter weather back to Stockholm with him, but he also took part in a fireside chat hosted by Dino Patti from coherence. The two talked about anything and everything video games, with a particular focus on Christofer’s three-decade-spanning career in the industry. Christofer reported to us that the event was its ever-consistent first-rate combination of industry-leading thinkers, perfect fireside pairings, and thought-provoking conversations – set against the stunning backdrop that is Iceland.

Also in late September, we were hugely honored to be the main sponsor of Women in Games at Space. The event took place on Saturday, 23 and was organized and hosted by WIG’s official ambassador, Paula Manrique. As promised, Paula expertly crafted a fantastic evening of gaming, networking, and women's empowerment. Attendees could enjoy a powerful panel of struggles and challenges working in a historically male-led industry, grab a drink at the Liquid Swords bar, meet old friends and new ones on the networking floor, and show off their video game knowledge on the main stage. Check out our entire rundown of the event in our Liquid Swords x Women in Games feature.

As you may have noticed if you’re reading this, our website has a fresh face. With the studio growing, moving, and finding its voice and ethos since its creation in 2020, it was time to give our virtual home the same attention our physical home received back in February when we moved. We were lucky to work with Stockholm-based ARC Group for the design and execution of our new space, and we couldn’t be more delighted with the site. There’s a splash of Liquid Swords’ history, a good gulp of what it’s like to work here, and for the cherry on top, a hint or two about our unannounced project: Game 1!

Life at Liquid Swords wouldn’t be right without some play to balance the work. Aside from the aforementioned summer vacation, we enjoyed a spectacular summer party, mindful yoga on our terrace, birthday celebrations, and (our particular favorite) a studio-wide Mario Kart tournament featuring some of the best trash-talking any perfectly timed shell attack can induce. Check out everything we learned about healthy competition, our founder, and Swedish insults in our Liquid Swords Plays: Mario Kart feature.

With all this buzzing summer activity, it might be easy to forget that we’re making a game but don’t worry, we haven’t! The studio is working towards a crucial internal milestone at the end of 2023, which (we confidently hope) will set us up for full production in 2024 and put us in the very best position to start talking about what’s going on behind these tight-lipped walls. For now, wrap up warm – Swedish winter is coming.
